Mary Jane Miller

I have recently been given writings of my great-grandmother. They date back to 1942 when her family was living in a one room cabin out in the country. Her works are titled, "Musings on a country life." While reading through them, it felt like reading my own thoughts or my own journal entries. I have an eerie connection with Mary Jane Miller and rejoice in the fact of being so close to her, without ever knowing her.

"I draw calmess from the stars. When the cabin seems to burst from the noise of the children and when I'm tired from the day's work I walk out under the stars. I have the blessed assurance that calmness and serenity will come to me under the stars."
"Wear yellow for lifting you out of the doldrums. Maybe it's only a yellow ribbon around your hair, or a golden yellow scarf about your neck, or better still, a bright yellow blouse, but wear yellow. It hasn't failed me yet. Don't ask me why. I only know 'tis so."
"In the country, and only in the country, can you feel complete freedom and relaxation. Or at least that's my opinion."
"One nice thing about living in a one-room cabin is that when a thing is lost, for example a sock, you don't have to look all through the house before finding it. It's bound to be in that one room."
"I shall miss the falling of the vari-colored leaves. But I console myself with the knowledge that there's beauty in a barren tree."
"Driving into our curved, shaded driveway after the noise and hurry of the city I never fail to say with relief, 'Ah, wilderness'"
"The Shasta Daisy is the queen of my garden. Get acquainted with Shasta Daisies. You will love them too."

Some of that sounds like me, yeah?

The Ice is Getting Thinner

"But you can't give your heart to a wild thing: the more you do, the stronger they get. Until they're strong enough to run into the woods. Or fly into a tree. Then a taller tree. Then the sky. That's how you'll end up.. If you let yourself love a wild thing. You'll end up looking at the sky."
